HEROES LIST

Sally Satel Dr Satel is one of only a few psychiatrists willing to take unpopular public stances on important issues. Co-author of One Nation Under Therapy: How the Helping Culture is Eroding Self-Reliance and author of PC MD, How Political Correctness Is Corrupting Medicine. http://www.sallysatelmd.com/

Christine Hoff Sommers - Another excellent thinker who takes a balanced look at gender issues, among other things. These 3 titles are great: Who Stole Feminism?,One Nation Under Therapy: How the Helping Culture is Eroding Self-Reliance and The War Against Boys. (http://www.aei.org/scholars/scholarID.56/scholar.asp)

John Rosemond - Dr. Rosemond recognizes that parents must lead. He has common sense and wit. His audio and video presentations are excellent. He is supportive of religion and traditional parenting. Mental health has a history of animosity toward religion. We, often, are the ones who are not tolerant. I hope this changes. The "experts" are not tolerant of traditional parenting. Dr. Rosemond is a direct challenge to parenting "experts" who claim to stand behind science (they usually don't). (http://www.rosemond.com/)

Michael Gurian - Has written many great books on gender issues including The Wonder of Boys and The Minds of Boys. Gurian takes a balanced look at gender issues and is supportive of both sexes. He is pushing for society to accept the nature of boys and girls. Once "we" accept their biology, we will also accept that boys and girls need to be treated differently - thats right - differently. Go to his web site and you'll see another place where science meets common sense. (http://www.michael-gurian.com/)

Glenn Sacks - Radio Show in LA and on the internet "From the Male Perspective". Glen is taking the stance that the feminist establishment and their friends in the media can't have it both ways. He challenges the mis-characterization of American fathers as a problem needing to be solved. He corrects the inaccurate portrayal of men in the media and their struggles in family court. http://www.glennsacks.com/

Albert Ellis- In the 1950s "invented" what is most commonly called Cognitive Therapy. Cognitive Therapy is a branch of psychotherapy which works and is intellectually coherent. (Many things some people call psychotherapies are neither). Dr Ellis has a sharp wit and tells it like it is. His frank style is a shock to the system. Unfortunately the world wasn't ready for him 50 years ago. We are ready now. His specific type of therapy, Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy gets the Father's Little Helper seal of approval. www.rebt.org/

Raymond DiGiuseppe PhD- Director of Professional Education at the Albert Ellis Institute; Professor and Chairman of Psychology Department, St. John’s University. Dr DiGiuseppe doesn't have many products aimed at parents or patients, but they are superior. (Father's Little Helper has reviewed every audiotape, they are all great, order at REBT.org.) His "Coping with Parenting" and "Coming to Terms with your Parents" are especially excellent. Ray balances scholarship and common sense. www.rebt.org/

Lawrence Lessig - author of "Free Culture How Big Media Uses Technology and the Law to Lock Down Culture and Control Creativity" - www.lessig.org/ - Powerful intellectual, lawyer, and advocate for the "Free Culture" movement. Creative Commons (www.creativecommons.org) model allows individuals to control how their creative works are used

Steven Pinker - Linguistics expert, author of FLH favorite The Blank Slate: The Modern Denial of Human Nature. The awards this book won are too many to list. It contains a modern view of human nature, which, at some point our society will accept. It is an important work. Pinker is one the smartest people on the planet. (http://www.mit.edu/~pinker/slate.html)

Larry Diller - Author of three excellent books Running on Ritalin, Should I Medicate my Child, and The Last Normal Child. Dr. Diller has been in the trenches treating children with emotional and behavior problems. He details how parenting and mental health attitudes have changed over the last 20 years. (http://www.docdiller.com)

Leonard Sax - Author of Boy's Adrift, The Five Factors Driving the Growing Epidemic of Unmotivated Men and Underachieving Young Men. Boys Adrift is on target with trends that have caused the problems for so many of our boys and young Men. http://www.boysadrift.com/

Dr Thomas Phalen - His book 1,2,3 Magic Effective Discipline for children 2 -12 is the best book on parenting technique: practical and without incoherent theory. The video version is especially easy to absorb and perfect for busy parents who want to reduce inappropriate behavior. (http://parent-magic.com/)

Camille Paglia - This lady is brilliant, and is one of the few intellectuals with positive take on popular culture. It is rare to find intellectuals who do not denigrate pop culture. There is great art among the crap! http://dir.salon.com/topics/camille_paglia/index.html

Jane Goodall - An inspirational figure in many ways. Her classic "In the Shadow of Man" should be required reading for every human. Also doing many good works aimed at preserving the environment. http://www.janegoodall.org/

Warren Farrell , Ph.D. -- author of Women Can Hear What Men Don't Say, Why Men Are the Way They Are, and The Myth of Male Power. Mr. Ferrell has excellent things to say. He is promoting a balanced dialogue on gender issues. Ferrell's books are well researched and packed with data. http://www.warrenfarrell.com/
